How to Pay for Home Care Services
Home Care Services in Alberta are essential for individuals who wish to age in place, maintain their independence, and receive the support they need. Understanding the various payment options and programs available is crucial for making informed decisions about financing these services.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) Home Care
In Alberta, home care services are available through Alberta Health Services (AHS). AHS provides services to eligible individuals at no cost. Eligibility for AHS home care services is determined through an assessment process. Individuals are assessed based on their needs and the results determine the level and type of care provided. You can make a self referral or refer a loved one by calling Community Care Access in your AHS Zone.

Private Insurance
Some individuals may have private insurance plans that cover home care services. These plans can help offset the costs of home care, but coverage varies widely, so it’s essential to check with your insurance provider to understand what services are covered and the extent of coverage.
Major insurance providers in Canada include BlueCross, Manulife, Sunlife, Desjardins
and Canada Life.

Self-Financing
For those who do not qualify for AHS home care or require additional services beyond what AHS provides, self-financing is an option. This means individuals or their families pay for home care services out of their own pockets. The cost can vary depending on the level of care required, the number of hours of care, and the specific services provided.

Alberta Seniors Benefits (ASB)
The Alberta Seniors Benefits program offers financial assistance to low- to moderate-income seniors to help cover the costs of various expenses, including respite care and housekeeping. Eligibility is based on income, and the program can provide monthly benefits to offset some of the costs associated with home care.

Veterans’ Affairs Canada
Canadian Armed Forces veterans may be eligible for home care services through Veterans’ Affairs Canada. The department provides a range of programs and services to support veterans, including access to home care services.

Self-Managed Care program
In some cases, individuals may be able to access home care services through government-funding. Such as with the AHS Self-Managed Care program.

Client Directed Home Care Invoicing (CDHCI)
The Client Directed Health Care Invoicing (CDHCI) Program is a new provincial initiative in Alberta that enables eligible individuals the opportunity to select their own preferred home care services provider and have the cost largely covered by government insurance. You can now hire Happy Hearts for Seniors as your own private healthcare workers for personal care services, home support, and respite care. And we’ll manage everything from service delivery to submitting invoices, our team will work directly with Blue Cross for reimbursement of approved expenses, so you don’t have to.
Enjoy reliable, personalized care that aligns with your needs and preferences.
